How it works
How you get your license.
The Maryland MVA sets these steps. This is the order they happen in, and what each one asks of you.
- Step one
Get your learner's permit
You can apply from 15 years and 9 months. You may enrol in the class from 15, before the permit arrives.
- Step two
Take the 36 hour course
30 classroom hours and 6 behind the wheel. Classes run 3 hours a day, Monday to Friday, across two weeks.
- Step three
Practise with a supervisor
60 supervised hours if you are under 25, with a driver over 21 who has held a license three years. 14 hours if you are 25 or over.
- Step four
Hold the permit
Nine months violation free if you are under 25. Forty five days if you are 25 or over.
- Step five
Sit the road test
We file your completion with the MVA electronically. Allow two business days before you book the test.
