General questions

How old do I have to be to obtain a learner's permit?

You must be at least 15 years and 9 months old to receive a learner's permit from the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration.

When can I take driving school?

Students must be at least 15 years old to attend driver education classes.

Do I need a learner's permit to enroll in class?

No. A permit is not required to attend classes at Beltway Driving Academy. However, the behind the wheel portion cannot begin until you receive your learner's permit.

How long is the driver education class?

The course is 30 hours of classroom and 6 hours of behind the wheel training. Classes run 3 hours a day, Monday through Friday, for 2 weeks, and the driving is done in three 2 hour lessons.

How many hours of driving practice do I need?

Students under 25 must complete at least 60 hours of practice with a parent or adult coach who is over 21 and has held a license for at least 3 years. Students over 25 must complete a minimum of 14 hours with an adult who meets the same requirements.

How long must I carry my learner's permit?

Students under 25 must carry a valid learner's permit for at least 9 months violation free before they are eligible for the MVA road test. Students over 25 must carry one for at least 45 days violation free.

When can I schedule my MVA road test?

After you complete a certified driver education course, complete your driving practice hours violation free, and complete the required waiting period.

Do I need to provide my own car for the driving lessons?

No. The driving school has MVA approved vehicles that are used for all driving lessons.

Do you provide transportation to class?

No. We do not provide transportation to class, or to and from the behind the wheel lessons.

For parents, behind the wheel

How long must my child hold a permit before the first driving lesson?

The first behind the wheel lesson will not be scheduled unless the student has held a learner's permit for at least 4 months.

How much should we practise before the first lesson?

Students are assessed during their first lesson. We encourage at least 20 hours of practice with a parent or driver coach beforehand.

How many driving lessons can we book each week?

Only one driving lesson can be scheduled per week, so the student has time to practise in between.

How far ahead should we book summer lessons?

For June, July or August, book at least three weeks ahead of the date you want. During spring and summer, allow up to 90 days to complete the behind the wheel portion.

Where do the driving lessons start and finish?

All students meet their instructor at 3012 Mitchellville Road, Bowie MD 20716. All lessons begin and end at the Bowie office.

What must be finished before behind the wheel lessons begin?

Your child must have made up any missed classroom sessions, passed the final classroom exam, and payment must be complete.

What standard does my child have to reach?

By the end of the third lesson the student must pass the evaluation with 80% or higher. If more time is needed, a one hour evaluation lesson can be scheduled at an additional cost of $75.

What should my child wear for a lesson?

Dress appropriately for in-car lessons. No strapless tops, halters, or short skirts and shorts. Shoes should fit securely on the foot, so no slides or flip flops.

How soon can we book the road test after finishing?

Completion is submitted to the MVA electronically once the behind the wheel portion is passed. Allow the MVA two business days to receive and process it. The MVA does not accept paper certificates.
