The real test

How the Maryland knowledge test works

Four things from the October 2025 Driver's Manual worth knowing before you book your MVA appointment.

25 questions, 20 minutes
The knowledge test checks what you know about motor vehicle laws, safe driving practices and traffic signs. You take it on a screen at an MVA office. There are 25 questions and you have 20 minutes to answer them.
Everything is in the manual
The Driver's Manual says it includes all the information you will be tested on. Section 4, on signs, signals and pavement markings, is the longest section in the book, so give it the most time.
Vision comes first
Before the knowledge test you take a vision screening: at least 20/40 in each eye and a field of vision of at least 140 degrees. If you need glasses or contacts to pass it, your license will say you must wear them to drive.
Use both practice tests
The MVA has its own Online Driver Test Tutorial on mva.maryland.gov, which shows you the format. Ours does something different: every question you miss points you back to the page to read.
